History
Origins and Founding (2012–2016)
FlowForma originated from Ergo, a Dublin-based information technology services company and Microsoft consultancy co-founded in 1993 by John Purdy and Tim Sheehy. Ergo grew to become one of Ireland's larger IT services firms, with a focus on Microsoft technologies and cloud services.[3]
Product development on what would become FlowForma began in January 2012, when Ergo employees identified a market opportunity while delivering client work on Microsoft SharePoint, recognising demand for a no-code process automation tool that would allow organisations to digitise workflows without software development skills.[4] The Irish Times reported in 2014 that FlowForma had been developed within Ergo, launched in Ireland, and exported to the UK.[5]
The product was officially launched in May 2013 and continued to be developed within Ergo while receiving early-stage funding and support from Enterprise Ireland, the Irish government's enterprise development agency, to support its R&D programme and expansion into international markets.[6] In early 2016, FlowForma was established as a separate legal entity, making it Ergo's second company spin-off after Fenergo, a fintech firm whose stake had been sold to US private equity firm Insight Partners in 2015.[7] At the point of incorporation, Padraig Canavan, founder and former chief executive of Derry-based software firm Singularity, which he sold for $48.1 million in 2011, was appointed as FlowForma's first Chairperson.[8][9]
Early Growth (2016–2018)
Following incorporation, FlowForma began building its user base across the United Kingdom, Ireland, and beyond.[10] The company received a grant from the European Union's EASME (Executive Agency for SMEs) in 2018, supplementing its Enterprise Ireland backing.[2]
In 2017, FlowForma received the Microsoft Office App 'People's Choice Award' at Microsoft Ignite in Orlando, Florida, an award determined by user votes from more than 2,000 responses.[11] Also in 2017, Forrester Research included FlowForma as a Strong Performer in its Forrester New Wave: Low-Code Platforms for Business Developers report, with differentiated rankings in startup experience, user interface development, and digital process automation.[12]
By mid-2018, FlowForma reported 150,000 users and 62 per cent year-on-year growth. Clients at the time included Aon, Uniphar, Grant Thornton, and Grafton Group. The company was headquartered in Dublin with offices in London and Boston.[13] FlowForma has been included in G2's industry reports every year since 2018.[1]
From January 2019, Forrester Research has included FlowForma in its digital process automation reports, initially recognising it as a DPA-wide vendor across 41 vendors assessed in its 'Now Tech: Rapid App Delivery' report. FlowForma has continued to be included in Forrester's DPA-related reports through to 2026.[10]
Expansion and Investment (2019–2022)
FlowForma reported growth during the COVID-19 pandemic, as demand for digital process automation increased when paper-based workflows were affected by remote working conditions.[2]
In June 2022, FlowForma was selected by NHS Digital as an approved vendor on the NHS Shared Tenancy 'N365', the national Microsoft 365 tenancy used by NHS Trusts across the United Kingdom. FlowForma was simultaneously placed on the NHS London Procurement Partnership framework.[14]
In June 2022, FlowForma raised a funding round of €4 million from new and existing investors to support product development and international expansion. Colm Heffernan, former Chief Operating Officer of Fenergo, was appointed as a director following the round. The company announced plans to grow its workforce from 30 to 100 employees over three years.[15][16]
In 2022, Forrester Research included FlowForma as one of 43 Digital Process Automation providers in its 'Now Tech: Digital Process Automation, Q4 2021' report.[17]
US Expansion and AI Transition (2023–present)
In March 2023, FlowForma opened a New York office to support its North American customer base, which at the time represented approximately 30 per cent of the company's revenue. The opening was attended by Tánaiste Micheál Martin. US customers in construction, energy, and healthcare at the time included Rimkus Consulting Group and Dresser Natural Gas.[18]
In November 2024, John Murphy was appointed Chief Executive Officer. Murphy had previously worked at KX, with a focus on AI, real-time data analysis, and digital transformation.[19] His appointment was described as signalling an expanded focus on AI-driven automation for global markets.[20]
The Agentic AI Pivot (2025–present)
From 2024, FlowForma introduced a series of AI-based features into its platform. These included FlowForma Copilot, a conversational interface for building automated processes from natural language descriptions; AI Agents that execute steps such as approvals, data validation, and document processing; an Ambient Process Discovery Agent that captures workflow requirements from business meetings; and an AI Summarization Assistant that provides process snapshots for visibility and auditing. The company described this shift as a move towards hybrid workflows in which human input, AI, and automation operate together.[19][20]
In November 2025, FlowForma launched FlowAssure, a product built around autonomous AI agents for vendor risk management.[21] FlowAssure is designed to automate the assessment of cybersecurity questionnaires, penetration test reports, ISO certifications, and SOC 2 Type II reports using AI agents that review, score, classify, and route decisions without manual intervention.[22]
Products and Technology
FlowForma Process Automation
FlowForma Process Automation is a no-code platform that independent analyst firm Deep Analysis described as a "quick-to-adopt process workflow platform focusing on medium to large businesses in industries that are not typically early adopters of high-tech software".[2] The product runs within an organisation's own Microsoft 365 and SharePoint tenancy and is available through Microsoft AppSource.[23]
The platform combines forms, workflow automation, document generation, analytics, AI capabilities, and governance in a single interface, allowing users to build and deploy processes without software development skills.[2] Users can access processes via desktop, iOS and Android mobile apps, and Microsoft Teams.[2] An external-facing 'Engage' module allows forms to be shared with individuals outside the organisation, such as suppliers or customers, via authenticated links or embedded website forms.[2] The platform holds ISO 27001:2022 certification and supports compliance with frameworks including DORA, GDPR, and HIPAA, with audit trails and governance controls.[24]
FlowAssure
In November 2025, FlowForma launched FlowAssure as a standalone product for vendor risk management. The product uses AI agents to review vendor submissions, classify risks, score compliance documents, and route decisions without manual input at each step.[21] FlowAssure's AI agents perform four functions: scoring of vendor questionnaire submissions; review and risk classification of compliance documents; approval routing or escalation to appropriate stakeholders; and anomaly detection with triggered follow-up workflows.[22] The product supports compliance frameworks including ISO 27001, SOC 2, GDPR, HIPAA, and NIST, and maintains an audit log of assessments, scores, and decisions.[24]
Microsoft Partnership
FlowForma is a Microsoft Gold Partner. The platform integrates with Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and Microsoft Teams, and is listed on Microsoft AppSource.[23] FlowForma received the Microsoft Office App Awards 'People's Choice Award' in 2017 and the 'Best User Interface for a SharePoint Add-in' award at a separate Office App Awards event.[11]
