Early Life and Education
James Jenkins was born in Havre de Grace, Maryland. Raised by his mother, Lillie Eliza Reed, after his father, James Wesley Jenkins’ death during his childhood.[1] After completing high school, Jenkins received the Al Cesky Scholarship and attended Harford Community College, where he played basketball for one year. He later transferred to High Point University in North Carolina with the intention of joining the basketball team as a walk-on. Jenkins also studied Entrepreneurship through Ashford University’s online program and personal training at the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
Career
In the late 1990s, he spent a year in California. After returning, he pursued training in the hair and fashion industries by enrolling at the Robert Paul Academy of Cosmetology. He subsequently worked in several salons across the United States.
Jenkins initially gained visibility through minor roles in film and television, including appearances in Minority Report (2002), Ladder 49 (2004), and the HBO series The Wire (2002–2008). He also appeared on the cover of American Lawyer Magazine.
These experiences informed his later transition to writing. His novels, often categorized within urban fiction and street literature, explore themes such as systemic inequality, incarceration, and survival in inner-city environments. Jenkins’s work is noted for its incorporation of firsthand perspectives on urban life. Two of his novels have received nominations for the International Impact Awards.[1]
