Hernandez began his career in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry, working at companies including Merck & Co., Affymetrix, and Digene, a molecular diagnostics firm involved in HPV testing technology.[2] In 2004 he founded Innovative Biosensors, a biotechnology company focused on pathogen detection systems.[3] He later founded Microlin Bio, which entered into a licensing agreement with Ohio State University in 2013 to commercialize microRNA-based cancer research.[4]
In 2018, Hernandez founded Blue Water Vaccines, a biotechnology company focused on vaccine development, and served as its chief executive officer.[5] The company later completed an initial public offering on the Nasdaq stock exchange.[6]
Hernandez also sponsored several special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) focused on healthcare and biotechnology investments. Blue Water Acquisition Corp., a SPAC he founded and led as chairman and chief executive officer, completed an initial public offering in December 2020 and later merged with Clarus Therapeutics Holdings.[7][8]
In 2025 Hernandez ran as an independent candidate in the New York City mayoral election.[9]
In November 2025 he announced a campaign for New York State Comptroller in the 2026 election. In 2026 he received the nominations of the Republican Party and the Conservative Party of New York State for the office.[10]
