Justin R. Crepp is an experimental astrophysicist and associate professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Notre Dame. His research focuses on astronomical instrumentation, adaptive optics, and technologies for detecting and characterizing exoplanets.[1]

Crepp is PI of the TRENDS high-contrast imaging survey, a program that uses long-term Doppler radial velocity accelerations to select stars for high-contrast imaging follow-up.[2] Papers from the survey reported the direct-imaging discoveries of the benchmark brown-dwarf companions HD 19467 B and HD 4747 B.[3][4] He is also a principal investigator for iLocater, a diffraction-limited spectrograph developed for the Large Binocular Telescope.[5][6][7]
Education and career
Crepp received a bachelor's degree in physics from Pennsylvania State University in 2003 and a Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Florida in 2008. Before joining Notre Dame, he was a postdoctoral scholar at the California Institute of Technology from 2008 to 2012.[1]
Awards and distinctions
- In 2013, Crepp received a NASA Early Career Fellowship for the project "Working at the Diffraction Limit: New Exoplanetary Science in the Era of 'Extreme' Adaptive Optics."[8]
- In 2017, he received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award for "A Diffraction-limited Spectrometer for the Large Binocular Telescope."[9]
- In 2018, Crepp received a National Guard Patriot Award for support of a service member within Notre Dame's Engineering and Design Core Facility.[10]
- In 2014, iLocater was featured as part of Notre Dame's What Would You Fight For? series during the Notre Dame-Michigan football game.[7][11]
- Crepp served as a member of the National Academies' Exoplanet Science Strategy committee, which produced the 2018 report Exoplanet Science Strategy.[12][13]
