History
Katana Technologies was founded in 2017 in Tallinn by Kristjan Vilosius, Hannes Kert, and Priit Kaasik.[1]The idea for the company emerged after Vilosius, who had previously co-founded a direct-to-consumer manufacturing business, reported difficulty finding modern enterprise resource planning (ERP) tools suitable for small manufacturers.[2]
According to TechCrunch, Katana positioned itself as a cloud-based alternative to traditional ERP systems, targeting small manufacturing businesses and e-commerce brands that required production and inventory management tools but found established ERP products too complex or costly.[1]
In 2021 and 2022, the company raised venture capital from European investors including Atomico and Northzone.[1][3] TechCrunch reported that during this period the company expanded internationally and increased its customer base among small and mid-sized product businesses.[3]
Estonian business newspaper Äripäev has reported on the company’s funding rounds, growth strategy, and later workforce reductions amid changing global trade conditions in 2025.[4][2]
