Matopo High School is a distinguished co-educational boarding and day school located in Matabeleland South, Zimbabwe, approximately 45 km from Bulawayo.[1] Established in 1898 by the Brethren in Christ Church[2][3], it stands as one of the oldest mission schools in the country, with a legacy rooted in Christian values and academic excellence.[4]

History

Erected about 40km south of Bulawayo was so named after the range of hills in which it is located. Missionaries arrived on the 6th of July 1898,[5] the school started on the 11th of October 1898 [6]and the first student was Matshuba a thirteen-year-old boy together with other two girls in a 16x16 tent.[7] The Brethren In Christ Church in Zimbabwe established other missions after Matopo and these are Mtshabezi, Wanezi, Phumula and Nono Missions. Matopo High School has invested in modern infrastructure to enhance the learning environment. The school offers both boarding and day school options, with renovated dormitories for boys and girls. In 2018, the school installed a solar water heating system, contributing to energy efficiency and sustainability.

Leadership

Since 2009 the school has been headed by the Headmaster, Mr. Gardson Sibanda,[8] who is responsible for the management of the institution. Supporting the headmaster are other senior administrators such as: Deputy Headmaster – Mr. Mzingaye Mathwasa,[9] who has been assisting in academic monitoring and school administration since 2021. TheSenior Woman is Mrs. Thembelihle Mhlanga,[10] who focuses on student welfare and guidance, especially for female students. These leaders work together to ensure the smooth running of the school

Academic Excellence

The school follows the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) curriculum, offering a comprehensive range of subjects across sciences, humanities, languages, and technical fields[11]. In 2024, The school achieved a 92.3% pass rate at Ordinary Level, with 44 students obtaining five or more A grades. At Advanced Level, the school attained a 100% pass rate, with exceptional performance in subjects like Accounting, Business Studies, and Computer Science.[4][12][13]

Sports and Clubs

The school encourages student participation in various sports, including rugby, darts, athletics, and volleyball.[2][3][5] Matopo High School's athletics team has represented Zimbabwe at national events like the CASSASA Games. Additionally, students engage in clubs such as the Environmental Club and Drama Club, fostering a well-rounded educational experience.
