The club fields teams in local and national competitions, and occasionally in international tournaments. It is also involved in the development and promotion of handball in Victoria.[2]
History
The club, formerly known as Doncaster Handball Club, was established in 1993 by players seeking to support the development of handball in Victoria.
Venues
With limited media exposure and a player base that relies heavily on international participants, club membership numbers and participant demographics vary significantly from year to year.
Melbourne Handball Club has previously held training sessions at University High School and Melbourne Sports Centres – Parkville. It is currently based at Kensington Community and Aquatic Recreation Centre in Kensington.[3]
Teams
The club currently caters only to adult women and female-identifying players aged 16 and over, due to a lack of suitable venue availability in and around Melbourne. The club is actively engaging with venues in an effort to restart both a men’s programme and a youth programme.
Governance
In 2019, Melbourne Handball Club became an incorporated association (not-for-profit) and has since operated as a volunteer-run sporting organisation.[4] The club is administered by a committee responsible for governance, membership administration, competition participation and development activities.
Competitions
Since its founding, the club has participated in local leagues, national tournaments and inter-club invitational competitions. These include:
- Victorian Handball League – a seasonal competition for clubs in Victoria organised by Handball Victoria.
- Australian Handball Club Championship – an annual national tournament for Australian clubs organised by Handball Australia.

- 2016 – Winner, Australian Handball Club Championship, Geelong, Victoria.
