Etim Bassey “Mike” Asukwo (born 27 May 1965) is a Nigerian editorial cartoonist and visual artist known for his politically satirical cartoons published in Nigerian newspapers and digital platforms. He has worked extensively with BusinessDay and has been recognised multiple times in the Editorial Cartoon category of the Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting.

Early life and education

Asukwo was born in Idua Assang, Oron, in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.[1] He attended St. Vincent’s College, where he began developing an interest in cartooning through school press activities.[2]

He later studied Business Administration at Calabar Polytechnic before proceeding to Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, where he studied Fine Arts and graduated in 1996 with a specialization in sculpture.[1]

Career

Editorial cartooning

Asukwo began his professional career in editorial cartooning in the early 2000s. He worked with BusinessDay Media Limited between 2001 and 2003, before returning to the organisation in 2009, where he has served as Chief Editorial Artist.[1]

His cartoons are widely published in Nigerian newspapers, magazines, and online platforms. They typically address themes such as governance, corruption, social inequality, and political accountability. His work with BusinessDay has included regular editorial cartoons such as "BusinessDay Cartoon", "Cartoon for Wednesday", and others.[3]

His work has also been discussed in academic literature for its use of visual metaphor and satire in political communication.[4]

Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting

The Wole Soyinka Award for Investigative Reporting is organised annually by the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism to recognise excellence in investigative journalism and related fields.
