Nancy Howes is an American educator, artist, author, and philanthropist. She is best known as the founder and CEO of the children's educational company Know Yourself.[1][2][3]

Career

Before founding Know Yourself, Howes worked in infrastructure engineering, operations, and sales at companies including Texas Instruments, BBN Planet, and @Home Network.[4]

In 2012, Howes co-founded Know Yourself[5][6] PBC, a public benefit corporation based in Oakland, California, where she also serves as the CEO.[7][8] The company focuses on promoting health literacy and self-awareness among children through engaging educational materials.[4][9] Howes also founded the Know Yourself Foundation, a fiscal sponsorship fund to support health education programs.[10]

She is the author of Focus Pocus: A Parent’s Guide to Fostering Concentration and Academic Achievement in a Distracted World. In 2024, Howes was named one of the “Top 50 Women Leaders in Education” by Women We Admire.[11]

Howes served on the board of trustees of California College of the Arts for 15 years and has supported several nonprofit organizations focused on youth development and the arts, including New Langton Arts, Elevate Oakland, and Beyond Differences.[7] In 2017, Howes attended Bring Change To Mind's Annual Revels & Revelations event in San Francisco, highlighting her involvement in mental health advocacy.[12]

Personal life

Nancy Howes was previously married to American computer scientist and entrepreneur Tim Howes, with whom she has two children.[7][13][14]
