Necla Salih Suphi (23 March 1926 – 10 November 2000) was a Turkish Cypriot poet and teacher, recognized as one of the pioneering female figures in Turkish Cypriot literature. She was associated with the Hececi-Romantic poetic movement and is recognized as one of the four women poets of the 1940s generation in Turkish Cypriot literature. [1] [2] [3]

Early life and education

Necla Salih Suphi was born on 23 March 1926 in Nicosia, Cyprus. She was the daughter of Salih Suphi Efendi, a notable figure from Lefke, and Sıdıka Hanım (Sıdıka Salih Suphi (1905–1985), a well-known figure in Lefke for her leadership in women’s organizations and philanthropic efforts.[4]

Her childhood was spent between Lefke and Nicosia. In 1936, she lost her father. She completed her early education at the Shakespeare School and continued at Victoria Girls’ High School, where she began writing poetry.

In 1945, she graduated from the Teachers’ College.

Teaching career

Following her graduation, Suphi worked as a teacher at Ayasofya Primary School and later at Victoria High School, where she taught Turkish, music, and handicrafts.

Literary career

Necla Salih Suphi began writing poetry in the 1940s and became associated with the Hececi-Romantic movement, characterized by syllabic meter and emotional expression. She is recognized as one of the four women poets of the 1940s generation in Turkish Cypriot literature. Her poems were published in newspapers and literary magazines of the period. In addition to poetry, she also wrote song lyrics.[5] After a long interruption, she resumed her literary work in 1994 while living in London.

Personal life

In 1952, she married agricultural engineer Nevzat Hacıemin, after which she left her teaching career. The couple had three daughters and one son.Between 1968 and 1974, the family lived in Limassol, Cyprus. Following the events of 1974, they emigrated to London later that year.

In 1994, she returned to teaching at the Ali Rıza Değirmencioğlu School in London and resumed writing poetry.[6] Her husband passed away in 1995.

Death and burial

Necla Salih Suphi died on 10 November 2000 in London, United Kingdom. She was buried at Brookwood Cemetery in Woking, Surrey, England, beside her husband.

Legacy

Necla Salih Suphi is remembered as an important early female voice in Turkish Cypriot poetry. Her work reflects themes of memory, emotion, migration, and cultural identity. Her poems, originally published in newspapers and magazines, were later compiled and published posthumously in accordance with her wishes.
