McGuinness is from Glasgow,Scotland.
Career
Celtic
McGuinness worked as a first-team scout at Celtic F.C., where he was involved in player identification and recruitment. During this period the club signed Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk from FC Groningen in 2013.
According to Sky Sports, McGuinness identified Van Dijk while scouting in the Netherlands and recommended the defender prior to his transfer to Celtic.[1]
Van Dijk later joined Liverpool F.C. in 2018 for a then world-record transfer fee for a defender.[2]
Qatar Football Association
After leaving Celtic, McGuinness worked for the Qatar Football Association as a senior player recruiter. His role involved identifying players and contributing to recruitment within the organisation’s football programmes.[3]
Columbus Crew
In 2019, McGuinness joined Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer as Director of Scouting and Player Recruitment. During this period he was involved in international recruitment and squad building at the club.
