Presence
Presence, legally PresenceLearning, Inc., is an American educational technology company that provides remote special education and teletherapy services to PreK-12 schools.[1][2] Headquartered in New York City, the company provides a platform for the delivery of speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, mental health and behavioral counseling, as well as remote psychoeducational evaluations.[1][3]
History
Presence was founded in 2009 by Clay Whitehead and Jack Lynch to provide teletherapy services to school districts facing clinical staffing shortages.[4][5] In its early development, the company received a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences to develop its service delivery platform.[5]
The company has undergone several rounds of venture capital financing. In 2015, Presence raised $25 million in a Series C round led by Catalyst Investors.[1][6] In May 2020, the company secured a $27 million Series D round led by Bain Capital Double Impact.[3][7]
In December 2021, Presence acquired Global Teletherapy, a provider of remote therapy services for K–12 schools.[2] Along with the acquisition, the company secured an investment from funds managed by Spectrum Equity and TPG’s Rise Fund.[8]
Services
Presence operates a business-to-business model, partnering with public, private, virtual, and charter schools in the United States. The company maintains a network of licensed clinicians—including speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, school psychologists, and social workers—who deliver services remotely to fulfill student Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).[1][3]
The company also licenses its proprietary software platform to school districts for use by their own internal staff.[2] Through partnerships with clinical test publishers, the platform is used for the remote administration of standardized assessments, allowing clinicians to conduct evaluations digitally.[5]
Recognition
In 2024, the company was included in the Fortune "Impact 20" list, which tracks venture-backed companies recognized for social impact.[9]
Other notable industry recognitions include the GSV 150, an annual list of the top 150 transformational growth companies in digital learning and workforce skills (2025).[10]
