Appearances
Ralsei is a goat-like Darkner prince residing in Castle Town, where he awaits the arrival of the prophesied heroes. He guides Kris and Susie in sealing Dark Fountains, offering healing, strategic support, and moral guidance throughout their journey. His role emphasizes cooperation and nonviolence, serving as a counterbalance to Susie's aggression and Kris's reserved demeanor.[2]
In Chapter 1, Ralsei introduces the party to the prophecy and accompanies them in sealing their first Fountain, revealing his true appearance when removing his hat at the Chapter's conclusion. In Chapter 2, after the second battle against Queen, he warns Kris and Susie about the dangers of opening multiple Fountains, which could trigger the "Roaring," a catastrophic event threatening both Darkners and Lightners. In Chapters 3 and 4, Ralsei continues traveling with Kris and Susie through new Dark Worlds, providing strategic support and emotional guidance as they confront threats tied to the Roaring Knight, the main antagonist in the game.
Ralsei is featured in merchandise from Fangamer including plushies and pin sets with other Deltarune characters.[3][4]
Concept and creation
Ralsei was created by Toby Fox for Deltarune. Concept art dates back to 2014–2015, with Temmie Chang contributing additional design work. The idea of revealing Ralsei without his hat was a later design refinement.[5] Ralsei's name was derived from a character named “Ralse” in an unfinished RPG Maker game created by Fox’s oldest brother during their childhood, with Fox later appending an “i” to form the name used in Deltarune.[6]
Reception
Ralsei has received commentary from critics as part of the ensemble cast of Deltarune. In a review of Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4, Connor Christie of Pocket Tactics highlighted the strength of the game’s character writing, stating that the appeal of the experience lies in how well-defined its cast is, remarking that “I feel like I know Susie and Ralsei better than I know myself.” Christie attributed this connection to the dialogue and evolving relationships between the main characters, including Ralsei’s role as an emotional anchor within the group.[7]
IGN noted that the game’s characters contribute significantly to its emotional impact, describing Deltarune as “something incredible,” with Ralsei frequently serving as a compassionate counterbalance to the other protagonists.[2]
