Comment: We have zero interest in what their own website says, Wikipedia is NOT for merely providing information. A Wikipedia article about a company must summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about them, showing how it meets Wikipedia's special definition of a notable company. Wikipedia has no interest in what you want to say about it only in what others unaffiliated with the business choose to say about it. Theroadislong (talk) 16:03, 22 January 2026 (UTC)

Founded in 1984 and headquartered in Emeryville, California, the company provides certification and verification services across industries including agriculture, forestry, energy, building materials, consumer products, and supply chains.[1] The organization conducts certification and auditing programs in more than 100 countries.[3]
History
SCS Global Services was founded in 1984 by chemist Stanley P. Rhodes under the name Ohlone, Inc..[4] Early activities focused on food safety testing and pesticide residue verification for fresh produce.[5][6] The company’s early certification work emerged during a period of growing consumer interest in environmentally marketed products in the late 1980s.[7]
In the mid-1980s, the company developed the NutriClean pesticide residue testing program for fresh produce, which relied on independent laboratory testing rather than producer self-reporting.[6] Contemporary reporting described the program as an unusual form of third-party verification in the produce industry.[5][6]
In 1988 the organization adopted the name Scientific Certification Systems and expanded its activities into environmental product certification and labeling programs.[1] During the late 1980s and early 1990s, SCS developed certification programs for recycled-content products and other environmental claims as consumer and regulatory attention to environmental marketing increased.[1]
During the 1990s the company expanded its role in sustainability certification, including work related to forestry and seafood programs.[8][9] Its life-cycle assessment work on recycled polyester and other consumer products was discussed in The New York Times in 1994.[2]
In 2012 the company reorganized as a California benefit corporation and began operating under the trade name SCS Global Services.[10]
In later years the organization expanded its services in areas including supply-chain verification, agricultural certification, carbon accounting, and sustainability standards.[11]
