Career

Industry service and early work

Bhatta entered the film industry in 2013 as a contributor to the production of the film Ringroad.[5] In 2016, she made her directorial debut with the feature film Aadha Page.[2]

In 2019, Bhatta was elected Treasurer of the Film Director Guild of Nepal. In this capacity, she has participated in industry advocacy regarding professional standards and representation for female filmmakers.[6] In addition to her feature work, she has served as a segment director on the Cambodian documentary The Border Breath.[4]

Gunyo Cholo and international release

In 2025, Bhatta directed the feature film Gunyo Cholo: The Dress, which focuses on a transgender coming-of-age narrative.[7] The project was motivated by her interactions with members of the LGBTQIA+ community during the COVID-19 pandemic.[4] The film premiered at the Tasveer Film Festival and was later released in Cambodia, where it screened in 80 theaters.[8]

Advocacy

Bhatta participated in a 2025 protest regarding the selection process for Nepal's official entries to the Academy Awards.[9] She was among a group of filmmakers who requested greater transparency and filed a formal complaint with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.[10]

Style and themes

Bhatta's films examine themes of identity and cultural tradition.[11] Her directing style utilizes visual symbolism, such as the traditional Gunyo Cholo attire, to represent themes of belonging and acceptance.[4] For Gunyo Cholo, she worked with lead actor Najir Husen over an 18-month period to prepare for the role.[12]

Critical reception

Critical response to Bhatta's work has been noted in international outlets such as Film Threat and The Movie Elite, which both awarded her work a rating of 8/10.[13][14]
