The company became known for producing music and sound identities used in advertising and corporate branding campaigns for international brands.[3]
In addition to his work in the advertising and music industries, Elias has served as a lecturer and mentor in entrepreneurship and leadership programs at several international universities.
Early life
Elias was born in New York City on January 4, 1952.[1]
At the age of five he lost approximately 80 percent of his hearing. His hearing was surgically restored two years later, an experience he later described as influencing his interest in sound and music.[1]
He has a younger brother, Jonathan Elias, with whom he later co-founded Elias Arts.
Education
Elias attended Beloit College beginning in 1970, studying political science, economics, philosophy, and sociology. During this period he conducted an independent study examining the Twenty-sixth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which lowered the voting age in the United States from 21 to 18.
The research led to a congressional internship with U.S. Representative Abner Mikva.[1]
After taking a year away from college to work in manufacturing, Elias later completed his undergraduate studies after transferring to Northwestern University. He subsequently pursued graduate coursework at The New School in New York City in areas related to branding and design.
Career
Elias Arts
In 1980, Elias co-founded Elias Arts with his brother Jonathan Elias.[2]
The company specialized in music production, sound design, and audio branding for advertising and corporate clients. During the 1980s and 1990s the firm produced music and sonic identities used in advertising campaigns and corporate communications for companies including Nike, Apple, AT&T, IBM, Ford, Nissan, Levi Strauss & Co., and Adidas.[3][2]
Work produced by the company received recognition within the advertising industry, including Clio Awards and other international advertising honors.[4]
Elias left the company in 2006.
Later ventures
Following his departure from Elias Arts, Elias founded LivingWorks, an organization focused on business strategy and brand development. The venture includes Relationcy Studios, a creative division that produces brand narratives, experiences, and related projects.
Sound branding
Sound branding (also known as audio branding or sonic branding) refers to the strategic use of sound and music to create a recognizable identity for a brand.[5]
It includes sonic logos, advertising jingles, musical themes, and other audio cues designed to reinforce brand recognition and emotional associations with a company or product.[6]
The practice developed alongside the expansion of television and radio advertising and later expanded to digital media, mobile devices, and product interfaces.[6]
Companies like Elias Arts that specialize in the field create cohesive audio identity systems that allow brands to maintain recognizable sound signatures across advertising, broadcast media, digital platforms, and physical environments.[2]
Legacy and industry influence
During the late twentieth century, advertising agencies increasingly incorporated custom-produced music and sound design into marketing campaigns as brands sought distinctive identities across broadcast media.[2]
Industry publications have cited companies such as Elias Arts among firms that helped expand the use of original music and sonic logos in advertising.[3][7]
The broader field of audio branding later developed into a specialized discipline within marketing and design, encompassing brand sound systems used across advertising, digital media, and product interfaces.[6]
Teaching and mentorship
Elias has served as an adjunct professor and visiting lecturer at institutions including the City College of New York, EMLYON Business School in France, and Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences in Finland.
His teaching has focused on entrepreneurship, leadership, and creativity in business. In addition to academic teaching, Elias has worked as a mentor and advisor to entrepreneurs and executives.
