  • Comment: Good work so far on this article. However, unfortunately, in order to prove notability, an article needs to references 2-3 sources which are reliable, independent, secondary sources, which talk about the subject of the Wikipedia article at length. The issue with the sources currently referenced in this article is that the majority of them are from an encyclopedia, which is considered a tertiary source, rather than a secondary source, and therefore does not count towards notability. Of the other sources, most of them only mention Hourmouzios in passing, rather than focusing on him, and therefore also fail to establish notability. It definitely seems like he should be notable, but until we can see sources proving this, it will not be possible to approve this article. Good luck finding some more sources, and keep up the good work 👍 Absurdum4242 (talk) 09:44, 13 August 2026 (UTC)

Early life and education

Hourmouzios was born in Omodos in 1848, his father was Eleftherios, he came from a notable family of the village, that contributed to journalism, literature and music.[1] He graduated from primary school at his native village.[2]

Career

Educator

In 1917, he was transferred to Nicosia, by Kyrillos III, to teach Byzantine music at the Pancyprian Gymnasium until 1931.[1]

Cantor

In the early 20th century there was a debate on the influence of European music on Byzantine music, Hourmouzios was one of the proponents of Byzantine music, and he admonished those who were influenced by European music and changed Byzantine scales to match it, like Christos Apostolides.[3][4] He often used his newspaper, the Σάλπιγξ, to fight against the Westernisation of Byzantine church music.[5] Additionally, on April 19, 1936, Hourmouzios was honored by the Church of Cyprus with the Office of "Archon Protopsaltes of the Church of Cyprus" upon the proposal of the vicar of the Archbishopric, Metropolitan Leontios of Paphos, who later became archbishop.[2]

His most notable student was Theodoulos Kallinikos, who also later became the archon protopsaltes of the Church of Cyprus.[6]

Writer

Hourmouzios was an author of a number of books. In his written works he incorporated Cypriot Greek words, especially in the dialogues and in the speech of the narrator.[7]

Journalist and publisher

In 25th of January 1884 Hourmouzios initiated the publication of the newspaper Σάλπιγξ (Trumpet) in Limassol, he acted as both the publisher and the editor. The newspaper had a political and satyrical character, using the Katharevousa form of the Greek language,[8] it also published the poems of the national poet of Cyprus, Vasilis Michaelides.[1] Hourmouzios continued being its editor until 13 January 1901, when his son, Christodoulos, took over.[1][9] Then from 1912 to 1926 the director was Euripides, his youngest son. In 1926 the newspaper suspended its publication after 42 years, one of the longest running among early Cypriot newspapers.[8]

Additionally he published the satyrical publication Διάβολος,[8] the short lived newspaper Μικρά Σάλπιγξ, and the satirical weekly newspaper Μάστιξ, which had a short run from 9 August 1904 to 9 February 1905.[1]

Lawyer

For a brief period between 1878 and 1880, he worked as a lawyer in Nicosia.[1]

Personal life, death and legacy

Hourmouzios had seven children, all of them boys, among them Christodoulos a journalist,[10] Euripides a newspaper publisher,[11] and Georgios a lawyer and music teacher in Cypriot and Greek schools.[12] His grandson, Αιμίλιος Χουρμούζιος, the son of Euripides, was a prolific theatre critic, translator and writer in Athens.[13] Hourmouzios passed away on July 21, 1936, at the age of 92.[2]

Hourmouzios is considered one of the great teachers of ecclesiastical Byzantine music in Cyprus, which he preserved both on a practical and a theoretical level.[14] Multiple of his works on ecclesiastical music are published again decades after his death while his work on musical theory and Byzantine chanting continues to be discussed among scholars. When he was alive, he was considered as one of the leadership figures of Limassol and a man of letters.[8] In 2014 he was commemorated by a stamp from the Cyprus Post.[15]
