Early Life and Education

A Sikh Canadian originally from Punjab, India, Toor immigrated to Ontario, Canada as an engineer in the 1980s and studied for an MBA at the University of Waterloo.[4][5] He holds a degree in civil engineering[6][7] and has applied his technical background to hotel design and development. He entered the hospitality industry after purchasing his first motel in St. Catharines, Ontario in 1987 and began building the Manga Hotel Group.[4][8]

Career

Starting from the 1990s, Toor built Manga Hotel Group from a single property to owning and operating 34 hotels and approximately 6,000 rooms as of October 2025.[5][9], with additional projects in progress. He built the first Hampton Inn in Canada and Canada's first LEED-certified hotel.[5][10][11] Toor introduced the first Hilton-branded hotel properties in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia which he built.[12][13] Manga Hotel Group maintains a vertically integrated business model that covers land acquisition, construction, hotel operations, and property management.[5][10][9][14]

Manga Hotel Group is affiliated with flagship brands such as Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt, and InterContinental Hotel Group[10], and also develops residential and commercial properties throughout Canada and the United States.[15]

Toor has built 16 hotels from the ground up and developed independent hotels including the namesake TOOR Hotel Toronto,[5][16][17] SoHo 54 Hotel in New York City,[18] the Atlantica Hotel Halifax[19] and The Hollis Halifax.[12] In addition to hotel construction, Toor has also constructed multiple purpose built rental residential buildings.[11][20][21]

Philanthropy

Toor is active in philanthropic work. He established the Toor Family Foundation[30] which is focused on promoting health, wellness, art, and culture. The foundation has made a $1 million donation to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) and a $1 million donation to the Royal Ontario Museum.[4][2]
