Biography

Joachims studied computer science at the University of Dortmund, where he received his doctorate.[2] He later joined Cornell University, where he is a professor of computer science and information science.[3] In 2026, he was appointed Vice Provost for Artificial Intelligence Strategy Position.[4]

His research focuses on machine learning with applications to search engines, recommendation systems, and decision-making systems, including work on support vector machines and learning from implicit user feedback.[5] More recently, his work has addressed fairness and bias in machine learning systems.[6]

Awards

Joachims received the ACM SIGKDD Innovation Award for his contributions to machine learning and data mining.[7] He is also a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).[8] In 2020, he was inducted into the SIGIR Academy for his contributions to information retrieval.[9]
