History
The business originated in the 1920s in Osor, where Lluís Pons Sureda manufactured espadrilles locally. In 1946, his son Antoni Pons Parramón established the company and transitioned to industrialized production. The headquarters moved to Girona in 1968.
Under the leadership of Antoni Pons i Carós (third generation), the company began exporting to European markets in the 1990s. In 2012, Jordi Pons Oriell joined the firm, leading to the opening of the first proprietary retail stores in 2016 and the expansion of digital sales channels.[1]
Research and Heritage
In 2025, the company collaborated with the University of Alcalá and the Autonomous University of Barcelona on the "Espadrille Origin Project." The study focused on 6,200-year-old esparto grass sandals discovered in the Cueva de los Murciélagos in Granada. The project included the creation of replicas based on these Neolithic findings.[2][3]
Distribution
The company operates approximately 50 proprietary stores and franchises. Its distribution network includes multi-brand points of sale in over 90 countries, including locations in Colombia, Saudi Arabia, the Philippines, and the United States.
Recognition
- **2025:** Best Footwear and Leather Goods Collection, Spanish Fashion Academy.[4]
- **2024:** Sustainable Trade Award, Barcelona City Council, for its use of recycled materials.[5]
- **2023:** Pyme of the Year (Girona), Chamber of Commerce and Banco Santander.[6]
