Early life and education

Voltz JT was born in Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe. He attended Sanyati Baptist High School and later pursued a degree in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering at the University of Zimbabwe, graduating in December 2022.[2]

Music career

Early work and breakthrough (2016–2021)

Voltz JT began his music career in 2016 with the release of his first song, "Boys Rangu." By 2021, he had released two EPs: Power Moves, a collaboration with Kerposh, and Mayhem and Modies, his solo debut.[3]

He gained national attention with his track "These Days," produced by Jax Da BeatBully with visuals directed by Leoy V, which went viral for its commentary on the hardships faced by Zimbabwean youth and popularised the jecha trap sound. This was followed by "Nyaya Dzemari," addressing how money can cause rifts between friends. His collaboration with Holy Ten on "How Far" further solidified his presence in the Zimbabwean hip-hop scene.[4] At the 2021 Zim Hip Hop Awards, he won Best Song and Best Newcomer for "These Days."[5]

Life of Muvhimi and regional expansion (2022–2023)

In 2022, Voltz JT released his first studio album, Life of Muvhimi, through Mulanation Entertainment, featuring artists such as Tamy Moyo, Dobba Don, and South African rapper Emtee on the track "Pfuurai Nekuno."[6] The album was well-received for its storytelling and fusion of traditional Zimbabwean sounds with contemporary hip-hop.[7][user-generated source] At the 2022 Zim Hip Hop Awards, he won three awards: Best Album for Life of Muvhimi, Best Hip Hop Hustle, and Best Collaboration.[8]

N.O.P Makoni and NAMA breakthrough (2024–2025)

In 2024, Voltz JT released his second studio album N.O.P Makoni through Painful Ent., featuring collaborations with Tha Bees, Celcius, Bagga, Poptain, Atenda Chinx, and Nyasha David. The album earned him seven nominations at the 2024 Zim Hip-Hop Awards, where he emerged as the biggest winner of the night, taking home three awards: Best Album, Song of the Year for "Mkoma Brian," and the People's Choice Award.[9][10]

In March 2025, Voltz JT won the Outstanding Album award at the 2025 National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) for N.O.P Makoni, making it the first hip-hop project to win the category in the history of the awards.[11][12] He was also nominated for the People's Choice Award at the same ceremony.[13]

In 2025, he released several singles including "Crisis," "Medzai Fridge," "Cannabis" (featuring Sane Wav), and "Why Worry." At the 2025 Zim Hip Hop Awards, he won the Best Hip Hop Hustle award.[14]

Musical style and influences

Voltz JT's musical style, termed "jecha trap," combines elements of drill music with the Shona language, creating a unique sound that resonates with Zimbabwean audiences. He has explained that the style emerged from his desire for a deeper connection with his audience: initially rapping in English, he transitioned to Shona and fused it with the Western trap sound to create what he calls "Shona-trap."[15] The "JT" in his stage name stands for "Jecha Trap."[16][user-generated source]

His lyrics often address social issues, personal experiences, and the challenges faced by the youth. He cites influences such as Pop Smoke, Drake, Lil Durk, Jay-Z, Kevin Gates, the late Oliver Mtukudzi, and local artists like Scrip Mula and Jnr Brown.[15]

Industry impact and endorsements

Voltz JT's NAMA win in 2025 was considered a landmark moment for Zimbabwean hip-hop, as N.O.P Makoni became the first hip-hop album to win the Outstanding Album category at the national awards, an accolade that placed the genre alongside more established Zimbabwean musical traditions.[17]

Beyond music, Voltz JT has secured brand endorsements. In 2024, he was named a brand influencer for Delta Beverages' Sable Lager alongside actor Man-Tawa.[18] He also partnered with Merit Zimbabwe, a book manufacturer, for a limited-edition range of Voltz JT-branded counter books aimed at inspiring youth through education.[19]

Personal life

Voltz JT maintains a private personal life. While there were rumours linking him romantically to Kimberly Richards, she eventually married fellow artist Holy Ten.[20]
