Woman Within
Woman Within is a New York-based brand of plus-size women's clothing. It was known as Lane Bryant's catalog sales until 2006 when the name was changed. Woman Within specializes in casual wear, swimwear and intimates for customer sizes 12-44[1] sold online and through mail catalog. It is owned by FullBeauty Brands.[2]
History
The history of corporate ownership of Woman Within has been described as a “blitz of dealmaking.”[3] The Woman Within brand was created in 2007 by its then owner, Redcats USA, the US catalog division of Pinault Printemps Redoute, the French fashion conglomerate now known as Kering. Redcats had purchased Lane Bryant’s catalog and online plus-size brand, Brylane, from The Limited in 1999.[4]
As part of the sale agreement, Redcats retained the right to use the Lane Bryant name for catalog and online sales until October 2007, at which point the name would revert to Charming Shoppes, which had purchased Lane Bryant in 2001. In 2006, Redcats rebranded the clothing line as Woman Within.[4] “The choice of Woman Within gives us a name that’s ours alone,” said Redcats’ CEO.[5] The rebranding was completed in fall 2007.
Sale to private equity
In May 2013, Redcats USA sold the parent company of Woman Within, One Stop Plus Group, to private equity firms Charles Street Partners and Webster Capital for a reported $525 million.[6][7] Included in the sale was Redcats’ Woman Within, as well as a portfolio of other plus-size fashion brands.[8] In 2015, One Stop Plus Group was rebranded as FullBeauty Brands. Later that year, after an attempt to take the FullBeauty Brands public,[9] Charlesbank Capital Partners and Webster Capital sold a majority share of the company to Apax Partners, a European buy-out firm.[6]
On February 3, 2019, the parent company of Woman Within, FullBeauty Brands filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.[10][11] Later that year, FullBeauty Brands was bought by private equity investors. Today, it is majority-owned by Goldman Sachs, Oaktree Capital Management, and Clearlake Capital Group.[12]
Operations
All of Woman Within’s sales are made online or through its printed catalog. It has no brick-and-mortar retail stores.[10] Sales are fulfilled through a distribution center in eastern Indianapolis, Indiana, which has been in operation since 1961.[3]
Body Positivity
Woman Within has partnered with plus-size model and body-positivity advocate Emme to promote greater acceptance of plus-size body types and their fashions.[1]
