History
Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital traces its origins to East India Clinic Ltd., which was established in Kolkata in 1946. In 1947, the organization began operating two nursing homes on Elgin Road in Kolkata. In 1958, new construction began in Alipore on the land that once formed part of the estate of the Maharaja Nripendra Narayan of Cooch Behar.[1] It was inaugurated in 1961 by Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, former Chief Minister of West Bengal.[2]
The hospital completed 75 years of operation in 2021. In 2025, it became the first hospital in West Bengal to receive National Accreditation Board for Hospitals & Healthcare Providers (NABH) accreditation for its emergency Department. [3]
Overview
Woodlands is a tertiary care multi-speciality hospital. The hospital has treated several public figures from India, including Mother Teresa[4] [5] [6] , Vece Paes [7] [8], Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee[9][10], Sourav Ganguly [11] [12], Madhabi Mukherjee [13][14] [15], Abhijit Gangopadhyay[16][17].
The hospital has announced plans to expand its bed capacity.[18]
