Early Life
Sunak was born in September 1949 in Nairobi, Kenya during the British colonial period. He is of Indian Punjabi descent.[5] His parents moved from Gujranwala to Kenya in the 1930s; Ramdas Sunak, his father, immigrated to Nairobi in 1935 as a clerk from Gujranwala.[6][7] Sunak's mother Usha was born in modern-day Tanzania.[7] He moved to the United Kingdom with his family in 1966 where they settled in Liverpool. Sunak studied medicine at the University of Liverpool, where he met his wife Usha Sunak, before moving to Southampton in the 1970s to pursue a career as a GP.[8][1][9]
Career
Sunak was employed at the Raymond Road Doctors Surgery in Shirley, Southampton.[6][10] He also assisted in managing the family business, Sunak Pharmacy (also known as Weston Pharmacy) along with his wife Usha, from 1995 to 2014 in Southampton.[11]
He retired from running the business on 2 June 2014 and the business was sold shortly thereafter.[12][4]
Personal Life
Yashvir married Usha Sunak in 1977 in Leicester.[1] They have three children: Rishi Sunak, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sanjay Sunak, a psychologist, and Raakhi Sona Sunak, Chief of Strategy and Planning at the UN's global fund for education.[13]
Sunak is a practicing Hindu and was a trustee of the Vedic Society Hindu Temple in the 1980s, a temple originally co-founded by his father, Ramdas, in 1971.[14] He has been a long-time season ticket holder for Southampton FC.[3]
