The embassy's consular section provides services to Pakistani citizens and foreign nationals in Türkiye. These include Pakistani passport applications and renewals, visas, document attestation, NICOP and POC-related services, powers of attorney, police character certificates and emergency travel documents. The embassy also provides emergency assistance to Pakistani nationals in Türkiye and maintains registration and documentation services for members of the Pakistani community.[3][4]
The embassy is supported by the Consulate General of Pakistan in Istanbul, as well as honorary consulates in Adana, Bursa, İzmir, and Trabzon, which provide consular and representational services in their respective regions.[5][6]
The Embassy of Pakistan in Ankara is also accredited to Kosovo, with the ambassador to Turkey concurrently serving as Pakistan's non-resident ambassador to Kosovo.
History
Pakistan and Türkiye established diplomatic relations on 30 September 1947, shortly after the independence of Pakistan.[7][8] The two countries subsequently developed relations in political, economic, defence, cultural and educational fields. The Embassy of Pakistan in Ankara serves as Pakistan's principal diplomatic mission in Türkiye. Bilateral relations have been institutionalised through mechanisms including the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council, established in 2009.[9] The framework has been used for high-level political consultations and cooperation in areas including trade, investment, defence, energy, education and culture.[10][11][12]
In December 2012, Pakistan recognised the Republic of Kosovo and established diplomatic relations with it. The Pakistani ambassador in Ankara was concurrently accredited as Pakistan's non-resident ambassador to Kosovo, making the Embassy of Pakistan in Ankara Pakistan's diplomatic mission responsible for relations with Kosovo.[13] The arrangement continued under successive Pakistani ambassadors to Türkiye. In 2022, Kosovo's diplomatic list identified Muhammad Syrus Sajjad Qazi, then Pakistan's ambassador in Ankara, as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary, non-resident in Pristina.[14]
The embassy has hosted and participated in diplomatic, cultural and commemorative events throughout its history. In 2017, it marked the 70th anniversary of Pakistan's independence in Ankara, with the ceremony attended by members of the diplomatic corps and military attachés. The embassy also administers or supports cultural and literary initiatives, including the Chughtai Art Awards and the Jinnah Young Writers Award. The latter has been organised for students in Türkiye and focuses on literary and cultural engagement between the two countries.[15][16]
In April 2025, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Ankara during an official visit. The meeting addressed bilateral cooperation in areas including economic relations, energy, mining, defence, agriculture, connectivity and emerging technologies. Pakistan's ambassador to Türkiye, Dr. Yousaf Junaid, was part of the Pakistani delegation.[17][18]
In May 2026, the embassy, in collaboration with Ankara University, organised an academic and cultural event titled Pakistan Türkiye Relations: Cultural Interaction from Khilafat Movement to Present Day. The event brought together Turkish parliamentarians, academics, diplomats, students and civil society representatives.[19]
In August 2026, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement, establishing a framework for trilateral defence cooperation and mutual security.[20] The agreement provides that an armed attack against one signatory would be regarded as an attack against all three. The Pakistani embassy in Ankara was involved in diplomatic engagements surrounding the agreement.[21][22]
