HNSKY was created in 1998 by Dutchman Han Kleijn,[1] who continues to develop and maintain the application. It is available in both 32 bit and 64 bit versions.

Initially a basic planetarium program, it has expanded in functionality to include the ability to control computerized GoTo telescope mounts. It is ASCOM and Instrument Neutral Distributed Interface (INDI) compliant, and supports the United States Naval Observatory's USNO CCD Astrograph Catalog (UCAC) catalogs, and European Space Agency Gaia data.[2]
