Hurricane Isaias (2026)

Category 3 Atlantic hurricane in 2026 From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hurricane Isaias (/ˌisɑːˈiːɑːs/)[1] is a currently active tropical cyclone located in the Gulf of Mexico threatening the Southeastern United States. The ninth named storm, the first hurricane, and first major hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, Isaias originated from a low-pressure area over the southwestern portion of the Gulf of Mexico on October 6. Upon reaching hurricane status early on October 8, it tied the record for the latest date a first hurricane was recorded in the Atlantic basin since 1905.[2]

On October 3, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) first identified a potential area for tropical cyclone formation, related to a low-pressure area that was expected to develop over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.[3] Two days later, a trough developed along the Gulf Coast of Mexico, producing an area of thunderstorms.[4] Wind shear over the gulf was also weakened in comparison to how it had been throughout the rest of the season, which was itself higher than average due to El Niño.[5] As the system drifted eastward on October 5, it was designated as Invest 92L.[6] The following day as the system became more organized, the NHC increased formation chances to near 100%.[7] Conditions in the gulf were generally favorable with moderate southwesterly shear being offset by "high oceanic heat content, moist mid-levels, and upper-level divergence".[8] On October 6 at 21:00 UTC, the system developed a closed circulation and was designated as Tropical Depression Nine.[9] Around that point in time, the system was moving slowly eastward as a result of a trough, and the convection was found mostly to the north.[9][8] At 09:00 UTC on October 7, the system reached tropical storm strength, and was named Isaias.[10] The storm strengthened steadily over the next day despite some shear displacing the low and mid-level centers,[11] and the storm was upgraded to a hurricane at 03:30 UTC on October 8 based on data collected by hurricane hunters.[12] By the end of the day, the system had strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane and turned more northward.[13] Strengthening continued overnight,[14] and Isaias was upgraded to a Category 3 hurricane at 12:20 UTC on October 9.[15]

Preparations

Mexico

In Tzitzapollo, 60 people were evacuated due a risk of landslides caused by the preceding disturbance. Shelters were opened in other towns of Veracruz to support evacuees.[16] Across five states—Campeche, Tabasco, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, and Yucatán—over two dozen ports were closed, including Tampico, Progreso, and Campeche.[17] Classes in Campeche were suspended.[18] In Isla Arena, the school was converted into a shelter.[19] The community was also placed under three evacuation orders, with 23 people taking a minibus out of the town.[19][20] Nine municipalities of Yucatán halted nonessential work and several had classes also suspended.[21][22] Hundreds of fishermen ceased working in Campeche.[19] Around 2,800 personnel in Plan DN-III-E were deployed to the Yucatán Peninsula.[23]

United States

On October 7, hurricane watches were issued for the coasts of Alabama, Mississippi, and the Florida panhandle and tropical storm watches extended from Florida to the Mississippi River Delta.[24] Soon after, many of those watches were upgraded to warnings.[25] Chevron Corporation began evacuating nonessential workers from oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.[26] Shell plc evacuated five oil rigs.[27] In total, 63% of the Gulf of Mexico's oil production, 1,300,000 barrels per day, was paused.[28] In addition, 56% of natural gas production in the region was suspended.[29] Amtrak suspended the Mardi Gras Service from the morning of October 8 through the morning of October 10 because of the storm[30] and truncated its Crescent to Atlanta with service to and from New Orleans being provided via a bus bridge.[31] Gulf Islands National Seashore closed before the arrival of Isaias.[32]

Florida

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued a state of emergency for 25 counties ahead of the storm.[33] Local governments in northwestern Florida also declared their own states of emergency.[34] On October 7, mandatory evacuation orders were issued in Okaloosa County.[35] Public transportation in the county was shut down.[36] Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport closed.[36] Multiple school districts in the Florida Panhandle cancelled classes due to Isaias.[37] The Mississippi State University basketball exhibition being played in Pensacola against Florida State University on October 10 was cancelled.[38] Several high school football games in the region were also rescheduled.[39] The Marco Patriots readied supplies and truck for deployment to communities struck by Isaias.[40] Some events in Tampa Bay, including the metropolitan area's celebration of Oktoberfest, were postponed.[41] In response to Isaias and another weather system earlier, some communities in that area also prepared tools against flooding, including clearing and grading canals and drainage ditches.[42]

Alabama and Mississippi

Kay Ivey, the governor of Alabama, issued a state of emergency for 40 of her state's counties.[43] Dauphin Island issued evacuation orders and shut down water service.[44] Sites across Alabama and Mississippi were opened for residents to fill sandbags.[45][46] Shelters were opened in Jackson County, Mississippi.[47] Two festivals in Southern Alabama had changes in schedule due to concerns over Isaias.[48][49] Multiple school districts in southern Alabama and Mississippi cancelled classes due to Isaias.[37][50] Several high school and collegiate American football games in the region were rescheduled.[39] Gulf State Park closed before the arrival of Isaias.[36] The Coast Transit Authority halted service.[51] Panic buying of gasoline was reported in Alabama, associated with an increase in prices partially from an escalation in the 2026 Iran war.[52][53]

Elsewhere

The governor of Georgia, Brian Kemp, issued a state of emergency for his whole state.[54]

The Que Pasa Fest in New Orleans was cancelled due to Isaias.[55]

Impact

Mexico

Isaias and its precursor combined with a cold front produced rainfall in the state of Tamaulipas only a week after a previous flood event.[56] Rainfall totals of 1 inch (25 mm) to 3 inches (76 mm) fell in Matamoros. Several roads were flooded in the city.[57] Floods resulted in the suspension of classes at six schools in Matamoros.[58] In northern Veracruz, 25 municipalities reported some sort of impact including downed trees, damaged homes, and overflowing rivers. Several towns in Zontecomatlán reported having degraded access. A bridge connecting the aforementioned municipality to Xoxocapa was damaged.[16]

Before the tropical cyclone formed, Yucatán's soils were already well saturated, increasing the flood threat.[59] Strong winds and surf in Campeche downed eight palapas and caused beach erosion in Sabancuy [es].[60] A road connecting Isla Arena became flooded.[61] During the passage of Isaias, authorities reported power and water outages in Campeche, with storm conditions from Isaias inhibiting recovery.[62]
