History
Price increase
In June 2026, The Wall Street Journal reported that the iPhone 18 Pro pricing had increased and the phone could start near $1,399, but the Apple event on September 9 revealed a $1,300 price tag.[9][10] Tim Cook stated that the company is not immune to soaring memory chip costs, and more clarification could arrive with the next iPhone in September 2026,[9][10] and suggested that Apple would need to increase device costs to maintain its current profit margins, given the cost of memory chips and SSDs.[11] Fellow companies like Nvidia and OpenAI are building AI server facilities, which may have caused the chip shortage and rising costs.[12] J.P. Morgan stated that iPhone price hike would not be more than $50,[13] and Fixed Focus Digital stated that it will definitely see a price hike, adding that the iPhone Duo would be priced 10% to 20% higher than previously expected.[14] IDC predicted that the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max may see a $200 price increase.[15]
The price increase was confirmed at the September 9, 2026 Apple Event, with the Pro model starting at $1,199 and the Pro Max model starting at $1,299.[16]
Data breach and iPhone 18 Pro leak
The A20 Pro, which would be used in the iPhone 18 Pro, was allegedly leaked in June 2026 adopting the Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module (WMCM) packaging.[17][18] In addition, the motherboard design for the iPhone 18 Pro, as well as information for the list of suppliers, parts, images, and videos of the unreleased iPhone 18 Pro prototype were leaked after confidential Apple files were leaked after a supplier cyberattack.[a]
Rumors and development
Many of the iPhone 18 Pro features and design changes were rumored before the announcement of the iPhone 17 Pro.[23][24] Reports as early as September 2025 suggested that the next iPhone would feature a smaller dynamic island.[25] Reports of the iPhone 18 Pro would later be known in December 2025 and January 2026 where the next iPhone would feature a under-screen Face ID,[26][27] and sizes for the smaller dynamic island were known.[28][29] In late-February 2026, trial production for the iPhone 18 Pro was started, suggesting that Apple had finalized its design and that the phone would enter early stages of manufacturing.[30][31] In late-March 2026, images were posted showing a prototype iPhone 18 Pro with a smaller dynamic Island.[32]
Multiple reports of the iPhone 18 Pro were reported In June 2026, ranging from supposed to be screen protectors,[33] to a larger camera module,[34][35] and pictures showing the iPhone 18 Pro's sim tray in a rumored color.[36] Battery capacities for the iPhone 18 Pro were also known.[37] In July 2026, battery capacities for the iPhone 18 Pro Max were leaked.[38][39] Mass production for the iPhone 18 Pro began to surface soon after, where Foxconn would ramp up hiring ahead of its unveiling.[40][41]
In August 2026, Tim Culpan reported that the DRAM, which would be used in the iPhone 18 Pro, was awaiting delivery, and that the phones would have limited availability upon launch.[42][43] A picture of an actual battery pack for the iPhone 18 Pro Max was leaked soon after, showing the exact battery capacity,[44] and references to the iPhone 18 Pro were revealed in the beta release of iOS 27.[45] Cases from a third-party manufacturer for the then-upcoming phones were also found, showing the listings for the iPhone 18 Pro cases at Best Buy, cross-compatible with the base model iPhone 17 Pro.[46][47]
In September 2026, reports indicated that the color options for the upcoming lineup would include a black color option, but not a silver color option.[48][49] However, an image of a SIM card trays for the upcoming lineup was shown, showing that the lineup would include three rumored colors, excluding the black color option.[50][51]
