History
Development
In November 2016, Apple Inc. received patents for iPhones that could fold in a book[4] and a clamshell shape.[5] In October 2017, The Bell reported that Apple was working on a foldable display with LG Display with production expected to begin in 2020;[6] Bank of America corroborated that report in March 2018.[7]
In December 2024, Analyst Ross Young reported that Apple would debut a foldable iPhone, in the second half of 2026. Early rumors of the foldable iPhone suggested that the foldable iPhone could be between 7.9 and 8.3 inches in size with a clamshell design (similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip).[8][9] Early planning for the foldable iPhone was reported, and the phone would be eSIM-only, similar to Apple's upcoming iPhone Air, which was in development at the time.[10] In February 2025, the company started reporting on ultra-thin glass, display sizes, and details about its display crease.[11][12] Apple was also working to eliminate the crease for the foldable iPhone. Samsung was also reported to be the supplier of the OLED Display for the foldable iPhone, and Apple was focusing on developing its first foldable iPhone for release in 2026.[13][14] By March, early reports now suggesting a book-style design with a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer display.[15][16] Soon after, first signs of the foldable iPhone's existence were surfaced in the NPI phase at Foxconn.[17][18]
The phone was initially presumed to be called the “iPhone Fold” because of its OLED folding display. Reports in April 2026 suggested that it would instead be named the “iPhone Ultra.”.[19][20]
In July 2026, references to the foldable iPhone were revealed in the beta release of iOS 27.[21][22][23]
Production
Early reports of production began to surface in June 2026, with components being supplied with the manufacturing of the OLED displays for the foldable iPhone.[24][25] Production of the foldable iPhone began to surface in July 2026, where Apple would need to ramp foldable iPhone production to 10 million foldable iPhones ahead of its unveiling.[26][27] Mass production of the foldable iPhone had started,[28][29] along with vapor chamber production soon after,[30][31] suggesting that Apple would shortly release a phone with an OLED folding display, an A20 chip, an Apple C2 modem, and a Touch ID power button.[28][29] Multiple reports suggested that the foldable iPhone would suffer production hurdles for final mass-production adjustments.[32][33] In September 2026, reports confirm that the foldable iPhone production is ramping up slowly with only a few hundred units a day by late-August.[34][35]
Unveiling and release
On August 26, 2026, Apple announced an event for September 9 with the tagline "Surprise and shine," set for September 9, 2026, sparking speculation about the anticipated foldable iPhone.[36]
The iPhone Duo was revealed at the event September 9, 2026.[2][3]
Design
The iPhone Duo comes in two colors, Night Sky and Star White:

The iPhone Duo features a titanium frame and a foldable display system. When closed, the device can be used through its external display as a conventional smartphone. When opened, the internal display provides a larger display, similar to an iPad Mini.
The foldable uses Ceramic Shield 2 protection on the front of the display and Ceramic Shield on back of the device and has an IP68 rating for resistance to dust and water.
The foldable design allows the device to be used in different positions, with iOS automatically adapting the interface depending on whether the device is fully open, partially folded, or closed.
