Early life

Botterill grew up in Wakefield; her mother worked as a carer and her father as a prison officer.[4] She did not attend university and began working at the local River Island store aged 16, having worked since age 13.[5][6]

She also worked as the community development officer for local rugby team Wakefield Trinity where she campaigned to improve local children's health and wellbeing.[4]

Early career

From 2013 to 2019, Botterill worked as parliamentary assistant and head of office to Yvette Cooper MP, whom she met while campaigning to save a Sure Start centre in Cooper's Normanton, Pontefract and Castleford constituency.[6] She also worked as a corporate affairs adviser for Yorkshire Water, and later public affairs manager for 38 Degrees.[7] Prior to her election, she worked for Portland Communications.[8]

Parliamentary career

Botterill was selected as the Labour prospective parliamentary candidate for the Ossett and Denby Dale constituency in September 2023.[9]

Shortly after her election, she was appointed as the parliamentary private secretary to the Home Office.[3] In her maiden speech, she said one of her focuses as a Member of Parliament would be campaigning for opportunities for young people in her constituency.[10]

In November 2024, Botterill voted in favour of the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, which proposes to legalise assisted suicide.[11] Botterill has campaigned and voted for more regulation of the water industry.[12]

In the September 2025 cabinet reshuffle Botterill was appointed to the ministerial position of assistant government whip.[13]
