Adams is a councillor for Fraserburgh and District on Aberdeenshire Council.[3]
At the 2026 Scottish Parliament election in May 2026, he unsuccessfully contested Banffshire and Buchan Coast constituency.[4][5][6] He was also the fourth-placed candidate on the Conservative regional list for North East Scotland, being the highest-placed Conservative to not be elected. Douglas Lumsden, who was second on the regional list there, is expected to vacate his Scottish Parliament seat after being elected to the House of Commons in June 2026, which would lead to James Adams taking his place in the Scottish Parliament.
