John McAllister (boxer)

McAllister, from Port Glasgow,^[3] was a member of the Kingston Boys' Club in Kingston, Glasgow.^[4]

He moved up to lightweight in 1978^[5] and represented the 1978 Commonwealth Games team^[6] at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Canada,^[7] where he competed in the lightweight category^[8] and won the bronze medal after reaching the final before being beaten by Patrick Waweru of Kenya.^[9]

In 1980 he won the Scottish light-welterweight Championship^[10] and subsequently reached the final of the prestigious ABA Championships at Wembley Arena, losing to Tony Willis.^[11]

He moved up another weight division, participating at welterweight^[12] and went to a second Commonwealth Games when selected by the Scottish team at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia,^[13] where he competed in the welterweight division.^[14]

McAllister turned professional during 1984 and fought in 14 professional bouts.^[2]
