Alsop was a member of the Llandaff Amateur Boxing Club in Cardiff[1] when he won his first Welsh WABA Championships, boxing at lightweight in 1982.[3][1]
Alsop was only one of two Welsh boxers that represented the Welsh team
at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia,[4] where he competed in the lightweight division. After beating Moses Ririan he was eliminated from the competition by Brian Tink of Australia in the quarter-final round.[5]
In April 1986, Alsop, an electrician at Aberthaw Power Station by profession,[1][6] won his second Welsh championship in the heavier division of light-welterweight,[7] which helped secure a place at the Commonwealth Games.[8]
Now boxing out of the Cardiff YMCA Amateur Boxing Club he went on to win the prestigious ABA Championships at Wembley Arena.
[9] It later transpired that Alsop had broken his nose in the semi-final, which he kept secret in order to fight in the final.[10]
Alsop attended a second Commonwealth Games after being selected by the Welsh team[11] at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh,[12] Scotland, where he competed in the light-welterweight division[13] but was eliminated in the preliminary round by Canadian Howard Grant.[14]
