Moonshot releases the Kimi series of open weights large language models, available via web, API, and the Kimi Code command-line agent. These are capable of multimodal image and video input, and their "Swarm" feature utilizes hundreds of sub-agents for deep research.[1] Kimi K3's performance led the AI industry in China and rivalled frontier models from US companies OpenAI and Anthropic.[2] Despite its open weights, K3's custom license requires revenue sharing of up to 30% for inference providers generating over US$20 million annually.[3]
Kimi K2, a one-trillion parameter model, released July 2025, and followed by K2.5 in January 2026, and K2.6 in April. Kimi models have been used as the basis or for post-training of US models, including Thinking Machines Lab's Inkling,[4] Cursor's Composer 2,[5] and Cognition AI's Devin AI.[6] In September 2026, Anthropic accused Moonshot of covertly routing Kimi requests to its Claude models and distilling Claude via these responses.
History
Moonshot AI was founded in March 2023 in China. In October 2023, the company officially released the Kimi chatbot and began closed-beta testing.[7]
In July 2024, Kimi's "context caching" feature entered public beta.[8]
On 11 October 2024, Kimi Explore Edition, featuring AI-powered autonomous search, went live globally;[9] monthly active users have since exceeded 36 million.[10][11]
In September 2025, Moonshot AI added an agentic AI feature to Kimi known as "OK Computer". It is capable of creating multi-page websites and editable slides from simple user prompts and can process up to 1 million rows of input data at once, and output text, audio, images, and video.[12][13]
In August 2026, legal startup Harvey unveiled its new model using Kimi.[14]
Models
On 16 November 2023, Kimi was released to the general public based on the Moonshot model. The first version of Kimi supported lossless context of 128,000 tokens,[15] making it the first AI model that was capable of accepting contexts of this size.[16]
In March 2024, Moonshot AI began closed beta testing of an updated version of Kimi with a 2 million character context window.[17]
In November 2024, Kimi began internal testing of an AI video generation model.[18]
On 20 January 2025, Kimi K1.5 was released. Moonshot AI claimed it matched the performance of OpenAI o1 in mathematics, coding, and multimodal reasoning capabilities.[19]
In April 2025, Kimi-VL, an open source 16 billion parameter mixture of experts (MoE) large language model with 3 billion active parameters, was released. In June, a reasoning model named Kimi-VL-Thinking was also released.[20][21]
In June 2025, Kimi-Dev, a 72B parameter coding-focused model based on Qwen2.5-72B, was released.[22][23] Also in June, Moonshot AI released Kimi-Researcher, an autonomous AI research agent available through Kimi's website and app.[24][25]
In July 2025, Moonshot AI released Kimi K2, a 1 trillion parameter mixture of experts large language model with 32 billion active parameters which was open sourced under a modified MIT license.[26][27] On 9 September 2025, Moonshot AI released an updated version of K2, Kimi-K2-Instruct-0905, which improved its performance in coding tasks and increased its context window from 128K tokens to 256K tokens.[28][29]
In January 2026, Moonshot AI released Kimi K2.5, a 1 trillion parameter MoE model with 32 billion active parameters. The model is multimodal in vision and language understanding with advanced agentic capabilities, instant and thinking modes, as well as conversational and agentic paradigms.[30] Moonshot AI released Kimi K2.6 in April 2026,[31][32][33] followed by Kimi K2.7 Code in June 2026.[34][35]
Moonshot AI released its Kimi K3 model, on 16 July 2026, with 2.8 trillion parameters. Upon release, Kimi K3 debuted at No. 3 on the Artificial Analysis AI leaderboard, behind Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol, but outperformed its competitors on Arena.ai's front-end web development benchmark.[36] Moonshot AI released the weights for Kimi K3 on July 27 under a custom license that requires any company with annual revenue greater than US$20 million to negotiate a contract with Moonshot AI before providing Kimi K3 to external customers as a service, and any company with either monthly revenue greater than $20 million or over 100 million monthly active users to display attribution of Kimi K3 in any product that incorporates the model.[37][38] Moonshot has faced accusations, including from Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, that Kimi K3 was made by distilling Anthropic's Claude Fable model.[39][40]
On 10 September 2026, Anthropic accused Moonshot of routing user requests to its model series Claude, then training models on these responses. The report claimed Moonshot used 5,380 accounts via proxy servers in Singapore and Japan, and made over 23 million exchanges mainly with Claude Opus, as well as extracting Claude's chain of thought, which is designed to only be summarized for the user in "thinking signature" form.[41]
Kimi models have been used as the basis or for post-training of US models, including Thinking Machines Lab's Inkling,[4] Cursor's Composer 2,[5] and Cognition AI's Devin AI.[6]
Kimi Delta Attention
In October 2025, Moonshot AI released Kimi Linear, a 48 billion parameter MoE model with 3 billion active parameters. It uses a more efficient attention method known as Kimi Delta Attention (KDA), which reduces memory usage and improves generation speed at longer context window sizes.[42] In July 2026, Kimi K3 was also released with KDA. In August, Chinese competitor Z.ai's GLM-5.3-Flash release also adopted KDA.[43]

Pricing
The Kimi apps are free to use with general rate limits. However, there are four subscription plans known as "Moderato", "Allegro", "Allegretto", and "Vivace" (all named after tempo markings). The plans offer higher usage of the K2 model, access to K2 Turbo, a version of the model that runs on faster hardware, extended access to Kimi Researcher and OK Computer, and faster Kimi slides generation.[54]
