List of earthquakes in 2005

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of earthquakes in 2005. Only earthquakes of magnitude 6 or above are included, unless they result in significant damage and/or casualties. All dates are listed according to UTC time. The maximum intensities are based on the Modified Mercalli intensity scale. Earthquake magnitudes are based on data from the United States Geological Survey. The year 2005 had 11 major earthquakes, lower than previous years. Despite this, the year was extremely deadly for earthquakes, with over 91,300 fatalities. More than 88,700 of them came from the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, the second-deadliest earthquake of the 21st century, which caused catastrophic damage in northern Pakistan and nearby communities in India. The largest earthquake of the year, a Mw 8.6 earthquake located west of Sumatra in Indonesia, killed over 1,700 people in Aceh and North Sumatra provinces, most of them in multiple islands off Sumatra's western coastline. Other deadly earthquakes also occurred in Iran, China, Peru, and Chile.
