Fauna

Montenegro is one of two and the main hotspot for troglobitic fauna in Western Balkans (though fragments of this hotspot reach into the easternmost tips of Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina). The other is in Slovenia, but the intensity there is far lower.[1]Map of Leptodirini species and subspecies richness in Western Balkans (Delić & Zagmajster, 2026)It hosts over 280 endemic species, with more than 75 of them troglobiotic. At least 30 of these belong to Leptodirini beetles.[1]
