List of ministers of economy and the treasury of Spain
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is a list of ministers of finance or treasury of Spain.
Introduction
Before 1705, it existed the position of Superintendent General of Finance. It wasn't exactly a finance minister, as there were other superintendents general, but while the former had a general role, the others administered specific taxes (tobacco, salt, mail, etc.).
Under the first Bourbons, the superintendent general had to coexist with other finance positions, such as the Veedor General or the Universal Intendant, but from 1720 the Secretary of Finance was, at the same time, the Superintendent General of Finance. This last position fell into disuse in the 19th century.
In recent times, there has been the position of Minister of Economy which, occasionally, has been merged with that of Minister of Finance (from 1937 to 1939, from 1982 to 2000 and from 2004 to 2011).

Notes
- The "strong man" at court during the last years of the reign of Charles II was Manuel Joaquín Álvarez de Toledo, Count of Oropesa.
- This is a conjecture. As José Luis Bermejo Cabrero recounts in his work "Financial Organization from the Habsburgs to the Bourbons: Councils, Boards and Superintendencies" (pages 237–238), there is not enough documentation to conclude when he left office, but it is known that he was still in office in June 1709, a year before his death.
- From 1714 to 1715 the "strong man" at court was Jean Orry, Veedor General of Finance and, from 1715 to 1719, Giulio Alberoni, Ambassador of Parma.
- Between 1725 and 1726, the "strong man" at court was The Baron Ripperda, who held the position of Secretary of State and of the Office without portfolio, as a favorite.
- In practice, the "strong man" at court since 1743 was The Marquess of Ensenada, secretary of finance.
- Gardoquí, Director of Trade, served as acting minister from 16 October 1791, due to the illness of his predecessor, until his confirmation on 25 March 1792.
- Although he worked with some independence, by this time Manuel Godoy, Prince of the Peace, already controlled the court.
- He did not have an effective government. It was heavily influenced by his predecessor, and his ongoing health problems prevented him from exercise the office.
- In practice, the government was run by Manuel Godoy.
- He was appointed as acting minister, but never took office. Juan Ángel Caamaño served during this time.
- Antonio Vargas Laguna, 1st Marquess of the Constancia, was the de iure prime minister until August 7, 1823, but he was abroad negotiating with foreign powers, so he never took office.
- Acting during the absences of the Minister: Julián Villalba (14–17 September 1835) and Juan Álvarez Mendizábal (17–25 September).[7]
- He never took office. During his term, Mariano Egea, Honorary Councillor of State and Director-General in the Ministry of Finance (17 to 25 May 1836) and Félix d'Olhaberriague Blanco, Director-General in the Ministry of Finance (May 25 to August 14, 1836), served as acting ministers.
- He never took office. Mariano Egea, Honorary Councillor of State and Director-General in the Ministry of Finance served as acting minister.
- Acting until the absences of the Minister: Antonio Santa Cruz, Minister of the Navy (13–20 August 1855).
- Acting during illness of the Minister: Antonio Cánovas del Castillo, Prime Minister (22 June to 25 July 1876).
- Acting during absence of the Minister: Bernardo Mateo Sagasta, Under-Secretary (31 August – 11 September 1905).
- Acting during absence of the Minister: Federico Requejo Avedillo, Under-Secretary (18 August – 31 August 1906).
- Acting during absence of the Minister: Luis Espada Guntín, Under-Secretary (17 August – 21 September 1907).
- Acting during absence of the Minister: Rafael Andrade Navarrete, Under-Secretary (21 September – 7 October 1908).
- Acting during absence of the Minister: Alfredo Zavala y Camps, Under-Secretary (11–17 August 1910 and February 21 to March 7, 1911) and Antonio Martínez Tudela, State Representative in the Tobacco Monopoly (22–30 August 1910).
- Acting during absence of the Minister: Isidro Pérez Oliva, Under-Secretary (July 23 to September 11, 1912).
- He acted as acting prime minister after the assassination of José Canalejas on 12 November 1912
- Acting during absence of the Minister: Mariano Ordóñez García, Under-Secretary (8–20 October 1914; August 4 to September 6, 1915; and September 19 to October 1, 1917).
- Acting during absence of the Minister: Pablo Garnica y Echevarría, Under-Secretary (15–20 February 1918 and 11–30 August 1918).
- Fermín Calbetón fell ill at the end of January 1919, and was replaced in his duties by José Gómez-Acebo y Cortina, Marquess of Cortina, Minister of Development on January 31. Calbetón died in February, and Gómez-Acebo continued in the role until the end of the government's term.
