On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 97% of 29 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 8.1/10.[6] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 82 out of 100, based on six critics, indicating "universal acclaim".[7]
Alissa Wilkinson of The New York Times wrote that the film "works best as criticism, making space for audiences to have their own experiences with her poems."[8] Matt Zoller Seitz of RogerEbert.com gave the film four out of four stars and wrote, "This is a gentle, attentive and moving work of art about an artist."[9]
