Megasphaera is a genus of Bacillota bacteria classified within the class Negativicutes.[1][2] Several species in the genus, including M. elsdenii and M. hexanoica, are known to utilize lactate.[3]
This classification has been reexamined.[4] This genus appears to be a member of the Clostridia.
The currently accepted taxonomy is based on the List of Prokaryotic names with Standing in Nomenclature (LPSN)[1] and National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).[2]
