Metiabruz is often referred to as “Mini Lucknow” because of the lasting influence of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the last Nawab of Awadh, who settled in the area during the 19th century after his exile from Lucknow. His arrival brought Awadhi traditions, cuisine, music, and craftsmanship to the locality, shaping its unique cultural identity. Today, the constituency is recognized for its vibrant commercial activity, traditional embroidery and clothing trade, and diverse urban population.
Politically, Metiabruz has emerged as an important constituency in West Bengal politics since its formation. It has generally been considered a stronghold of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC), with Abdul Khaleque Molla serving as the elected Member of the Legislative Assembly in recent terms. Elections in the constituency are typically contested among major parties such as the AITC, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Left-supported candidates.
The constituency plays a significant role in Kolkata’s socio-economic landscape due to its concentration of small-scale industries, wholesale markets, transport connectivity, and rapidly growing urban settlements.
