Background and development

Writing for Mud began in November 2024, while Wolf was touring for her previous project, Big Ideas.[1] Wolf described both feeling burned out and processing the end of a relationship, which resulted in her going to a retreat in Nashville, where she came up with the initial concept for Mud.[4]

Writing for the project was done in conjunction with close collaborators Jared Solomon, Jack DeMeo and Gigi Grombacher while staying at a log cabin near Big Bear Lake.[1][4]

Songs "Bottle" and "Covered in Mud" were recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York City.[1]

Additional work on the project was completed while camping at Joshua Tree National Park.[1][5][6]

Mud received a score of 75 out of 100 on review aggregator Metacritic based on five critics' reviews, which the website categorized as "generally favorable" reception.[7] Alex Hudson of Exclaim! commented on the album's themes of "romance, hedonism and addiction", writing "Sadness and desperation persist at a low-level hum in the background of every song even though, on its surface, Mud is fun as hell."[8] NME's Hollie Geraghty described the project's "emotional awareness" as its "spark", and praised Remi's vocal performance. While they were underwhelmed by certain tracks, they wrote "Mud will no doubt resonate with anyone who’s experienced a few scrapes and bumps in their twenties."[9]
