Background

The score for Obsession was composed by Rock Burwell in collaboration with director Curry Barker. The soundtrack was created to reflect the film’s psychological horror themes, blending ambient electronic sounds with orchestral and atmospheric elements to emphasize tension, emotional instability, and paranoia throughout the story.[1] According to Barker, the film was partially inspired by the Monkey’s Paw segment from The Simpsons Treehouse of Horror II, which influenced both the narrative and tonal direction of the project. Several pieces in the score were developed around recurring motifs tied to the “One Wish Willow”, a supernatural object central to the film’s plot. Tracks such as “Obsession”, “I Can’t Be Nikki”, and “You Wished for This” were composed to mirror the protagonist’s emotional deterioration and increasingly distorted sense of reality.[2]

Release

The soundtrack album was released digitally by Back Lot Music on May 15, 2026, alongside the film’s theatrical release by Focus Features. A vinyl edition of the soundtrack was also announced through Waxwork Records.[1]

Reception

Critics highlighted the film’s score and sound design as key elements of its unsettling atmosphere. Benjamin Lee of The Guardian praised the film’s “disturbing sound design” for intensifying the horror elements,[3] while Marshall Shaffer of Slant Magazine noted that the film’s chilling sequences were enhanced by its audiovisual presentation.[4] Katie Rife of RogerEbert.com also commented on the film’s disorienting rhythm and tonal instability, which contributed to its psychological tension.[5]
