Lewis was a member of the Maindee Amateur Boxing Club in Newport.[2] In 1979 and 1980 boxing at welterweight, he won his first two Welsh WABA Championships.[3] The following year after stepping up in weight, he won his third Welsh Championship, boxing at light-middleweight[4] and after another step up in weight he won title number four when winning the 1982 WABA middleweight Championship.[5]
Lewis was only one of two Welsh boxers that represented the Welsh team
at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia,[6] where he competed in the light-middleweight division. After beating Piamora Boas he was eliminated from the competition by Tom Corr of Northern Ireland in the quarter-final round.[7]
Going into the 1986 WABA Championships, Lewis had fought in 223 fights, winning 198 of them.[8] In April 1986 he won his fifth Welsh championship and second at middleweight,[5] which helped secure a place at the Commonwealth Games.[9]
A welder by profession and captain of the Welsh boxing team,[10] Lewis attended a second Commonwealth Games after being selected by the Welsh team[11] at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh,[1][9] Scotland, where he competed in the middleweight division.[12] In the quarter-final he lost to Australian Jeff Harding.[13]
