First announced in 2015, the station originally had the working name Prince Edward. Construction of the station began in 2017. In 2018, the station was named Prince Edward Road during a naming vote by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). The station was to be opened in 2025 along with the other CCL6 stations, but was delayed to 2026 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Singapore.

History

Entrance to the station's construction site

The station was first announced on 29 October 2015 as part of the Stage 6 of the Circle Line (CCL6).[3] Contract 885 for the construction of Prince Edward station and associated tunnels was awarded to China Railway Tunnel Group Co., Ltd (Singapore Branch) for S$310.8 million (US$225.07 million) in October 2017. Construction began at the end of 2017, with an expected completion date of 2025.[4][5]

Three station names – 'Prince Edward Road', 'Palmer Road' and 'Parsi Road' – were shortlisted by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) for public voting.[2][6] The station name was then finalised as Prince Edward Road.[7][8]

To facilitate the station's construction, the Shenton Way Bus Terminal was relocated on 25 June 2017.[9][10] On 8 March 2020, the concrete casting for the station's underground roof slab was completed. The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Sun Wu has also completed half of the tunnelling works towards the adjacent Cantonment station.[11] Some tunnels were constructed 3.9 meters (13 ft) from the foundations of a commercial building, which necessitated a stacked tunnel arrangement.[12][13] A protective underground canopy consisting of large steel pipes was installed alongside the stacked tunnel alignment, allowing construction of the station beneath Shenton Way while protecting the live traffic and structures above. This avoided the need for major utility diversions or road closures.[14]

Tunnelling work was briefly suspended due to circuit breakermeasures before resuming in June 2020.[15] In September, the Sun Wu TBM managed to tunnel underneath the old Tanjong Pagar Railway Station building. The tunnelling towards Cantonment station required close monitoring with devices installed to ensure no damage was made to the sculptures and interior of the former rail terminus.[16]

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, transport minister Ong Ye Kung announced in March 2021 that the completion of CCL6 would be delayed by one year to 2026.[17] Transport minister Chee Hong Tat announced in December 2024 that CCL6 was targeted to open in the first half of 2026.[18] In February 2026, transport minister Jeffrey Siow said that the extension's opening is dependent on the completion of current CCL tunnel strengthening works so that final testing and preparation for CCL6 can proceed.[19] The station commenced operations on 12 July 2026, after a preview on 4 July.[20][21]

Station details

Platform A of the station

Prince Edward Road station serves the CCL between Cantonment and Marina Bay stations. The official station code is CC32.[22] Prince Edward Road station is located near Bestway Building and the heritage buildings of Hock Teck See Temple and Masjid Haji Muhammad Salleh.[9][23][24] The station takes its name from the adjacent road, which was named in 1922 to commemorate the visit of the then Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) to Singapore to open the Malaya–Borneo Exhibition.[25]

Designed by RDC Architects, Prince Edward Road station has two entrances along Shenton Way,[26] and comprises three underground levels with two stacked side platforms.[11][27] The concourse has a motif resembling a wooden ship's hull, referencing the area's maritime heritage.[26][28] The ceiling panels are also modelled after the movement of waves.[29] At 297 metres (974 ft) long, with a depth of 28 metres (92 ft) and a width of 30 metres (98 ft),[30] the station is the longest among the CCL6 stations.[26]

The station has an Art in Transit work, titled Doppler, by Gerald Leow.[31]
