Overview
St. Mark's ward was created in 1890,[1] as a result of the Manchester Extension Scheme 1890, which transferred the townships of Blackley, Crumpsall, Moston, Newton, Openshaw, and parts of Gorton to the Manchester corporation.[2] Initially, it covered that part of the incorporated area of Gorton to the north of Hyde Road. In 1919,[3] the northern portion of the Longsight ward was transferred to the ward. Further city-wide boundary revisions in 1950 transferred that part of the Longsight ward to the east of the Crewe-Manchester Line to the ward.[4] The ward was abolished in 1971 and its remaining area was transferred to the Ardwick and Longsight wards.[5]
From its creation until 1918, the ward formed part of the Manchester South Parliamentary constituency.[6] From 1918 until its abolition, it was part of the Manchester Ardwick Parliamentary constituency.[7]
