American film producers subcategory disagreement
There is a disagreement on whether the article about Deric Augustine should be included in Category:American film producers. I've created this space to have a discussion rather than devolving into edit warring over the matter. There are two reasons that I do not think he should be included.
The first, as I mentioned in my edit, is WP:PARENTCAT. Category:Film producers from New York City, Category:Film producers from Louisiana, Category:Film producers from Los Angeles, and Category:African-American film producers are all listed as subcategories of American film producers (although African-American film producers is a non-diffusing subcategory). While other editors may disagree with the idea that these are appropriate subcategories of American film producers, the reality is that they are still listed as subcategories. Per WP:PARENTCAT, "Pages (and subcategories) should not usually be placed in both a given category and any of its subcategories or parent categories. For some exceptions to this, see § Eponymous categories and § Non-diffusing subcategories."
The second reason is WP:NONDEFINING. Augustine is listed as a producer on two short films that do not appear to meet WP:N and these listings lack references. I do not believe that "reliable sources commonly and consistently refer to" Augustine as a film producer, but I did not want to remove five categories from an article as I feel it would be disruptive (even if it is legitimate).
I'll leave this up for discussion purposes but if I don't see any objections in the next couple of days I'll go ahead with removing American film producers. Vegantics (talk) 19:57, 10 February 2026 (UTC)
