Mascasino?

I suppose it meant "maraschino" cherry. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 151.80.215.165 (talk) 15:22, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Requested move 26 October 2025

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: moved. While participants were divided on the merits of the move, the supporters made a well-backed case that the phrase hoi polloi is rarely capitalized, either by readers or by sources, with the result that the proposal is justifiable under WP:DIFFCAPS. This viewpoint does not seem to have been successfully rebutted, leading me to see consensus for the proposed move. – This entry was created 19 years ago (in November 2006) as Hoi Polloi (Three Stooges short) and was moved a year later (in December 2007) to Hoi Polloi (1935 film) where it remained for 15 years (until October 2022) when it was moved to Hoi Polloi (film). Ultimately, even "(film)" is unnecessary along with the three-entry Hoi Polloi disambiguation page since the film title with the uppercase "P" is the sole such entry. Hatnotes atop the uppercase Hoi Polloi and the lowercase hoi polloi can point to each other and, if consensus agrees, can also mention the similarly named Scottish band Oi Polloi. Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 00:46, 26 October 2025 (UTC)  Relisting. TarnishedPathtalk 15:07, 3 November 2025 (UTC)

Support move as a distinct spelling variant. The existing Hoi Polloi should be moved to Hoi Polloi (disambiguation) as it has 3 (4 including see also) entries. SignTheSign (talk) 06:42, 28 October 2025 (UTC)
Move of the dab page from Hoi Polloi to Hoi Polloi (disambiguation) may be seen as counterintuitive since a Hoi Polloi (disambiguation) main title header would automatically posit the 1935 film Hoi Polloi as the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC of what amounts to a WP:ONEOTHER dab page. The film Hoi Polloi and the expression hoi polloi can best point to each other via hatnotes without either being primary over the other.
If consensus concurs, a link to the entry for band Oi Polloi can be added within the hatnote text. As for the Oi and Hoi dab pages, users typing those short terms are unlikely to be researching "Polloi", however a link to the full "Hoi Polloi" form is nonetheless included among the Hoi dab page entries. Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 19:18, 28 October 2025 (UTC)
  • Oppose. The Greek term is very commonly seen capitalised and is the very clear primary topic. I'm afraid I find the idea that a Three Stooges short should be the primary topic for this term bizarre and helpful to absolutely no one. In fact, I would redirect Hoi Polloi to Hoi polloi and rename this article Hoi Polloi (disambiguation). -- Necrothesp (talk) 10:39, 29 October 2025 (UTC)
  • Support move. Add a hat note to the film article and update the hatnote at hoi polloi to point directly to the film. I don't think Oi Polloi needs to be included in either hatnote but I won't object to someone adding it. Regarding Necrothesp's objections, I don't find anything to support this. The Three Stooges film is, of course, not the primary topic for the term hoi polloi and this move does not indicate otherwise. Ngrams indicates that the title case Hoi Polloi is exceedingly rare compared to the standard hoi polloi. WikiNav shows that >90% of the Hoi Polloi dab page's traffic comes from hoi polloi and that essentially all the traffic navigates to the film. This indicates that signifiant numbers of readers are not landing at the dab page having typed title case Hoi Polloi and that readers who do so and land at the dab page are consistent looking for the film. This simple corrective is justified by WP:DIFFCAPS and WP:ONEOTHER (or WP:TWOOTHER) and will save a couple clicks for the relatively small number of readers who type in the title case phrase specifically looking for the film. —Myceteae🍄‍🟫 (talk) 01:32, 30 October 2025 (UTC)
  • Support per WP:SMALLDETAILS and Myceteae's evidence and the prevalence of lowercase use that I saw in Google Books (21st century) here and Google Scholar here (excluding title use). Erik (talk | contrib) 02:04, 30 October 2025 (UTC)

  • Support Originally was going to oppose, but Myceteae makes a good argument. See also iron maiden vs Iron Maiden. The existing page should be moved to Hoi Polloi (disambiguation) or Hoi polloi (disambiguation) with the other redirecting. ← Metallurgist (talk) 22:50, 10 November 2025 (UTC)
