Lead image consistency across language versions
I’d like to raise a concern regarding the current lead image used in the English Wikipedia article on Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
The image presently displayed appears to be a less representative and arguably uncharacteristic choice compared to the widely recognized portrait used in the Turkish Wikipedia article. Given Atatürk’s historical significance and the importance of visual representation in shaping first impressions, it may be more appropriate to align the English article’s lead image with the original, high-quality photograph used in the Turkish version.
The Turkish Wikipedia currently uses a well-established and historically accurate portrait that is also commonly found in reliable sources and archives.
Replacing the current English Wikipedia lead image with the exact same photograph would:
- Ensure visual consistency across language versions
- Improve the encyclopedic quality and recognizability of the article
- Reflect a more authoritative and widely accepted depiction
If there are no strong objections regarding licensing or consensus, I propose updating the English article’s lead image to match the one used in the Turkish Wikipedia.

- @Timurlenk6 I agree. It's odd that the English Wiki article lead image is an outlier. The image currently used is also not a commonly used portrait.

Birthplace
I don’t see where it’s been discussed before, but when he was born in Thessaloniki, Greece, it hadn’t been a Turkish occupied state for decades. Unless I am missing something, I believe the policy states to use the name of the birthplace at the time when the person was born. Unless I am mistaken (?) that birthplace was “Thessaloniki, Greece (Hellas).” Thoughts? HeidiRommel (talk) 04:19, 16 May 2026 (UTC)
- Nevermind. I did more research and I guess Thessaloniki did not become part of modern Greece until later. I can’t figure out how to retract my statement, so I guess :::facepalm:::? HeidiRommel (talk) 04:25, 16 May 2026 (UTC)
Change the picture!
There are far more iconic and representative photographs of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk available in the public domain. It is difficult to understand why this particular image—taken during the final period of his life when his health had significantly deteriorated—continues to be used as the lead portrait. Atatürk should be represented by a photograph that reflects the statesman, reformer, and leader who founded the Republic of Turkey, not one that emphasizes his illness. The current choice does not best represent his historical legacy or the image by which he is recognized worldwide. Please evaluate the available alternatives objectively and select the portrait that most accurately represents Atatürk's significance and public image. Nodepro (talk) 13:09, 5 July 2026 (UTC)

Although the phrase "Republic of Turkey" was changed to "Republic of Türkiye" in 2022, the term "Turkey" is still being used.
