Talk:Origin of the Albanians

The current “Hypotheses” section presents several outdated theories (Thracian, Dacian/Moesian, and migration-from-Romania models) as if they are equally valid alongside modern Illyrian/Illyricum continuity research. This violates Wikipedia’s core content policies, especially WP:WEIGHT, WP:NPOV, and WP:V, which require that articles reflect the current state of peer-reviewed scholarship and assign prominence according to scholarly consensus, not historical speculation.

The Thracian and Dacian hypotheses originated in the 19th and early 20th centuries, long before modern Indo-European linguistics, Balkan archaeology, or ancient DNA research developed as scientific fields. These theories are no longer supported by contemporary linguists because they contradict:

• the geographic distribution of early Latin and Greek loanwords in Albanian

• phonological developments that point to a western Balkan environment

• the preservation of pre-Roman toponyms in northern and central Albania

• archaeological continuity from Late Antiquity into the early Middle Ages

• recent population genetics showing Iron Age–modern continuity in Albania

Listing these obsolete theories without clearly identifying their outdated status gives readers the false impression that all hypotheses enjoy equal support, which is inaccurate and academically misleading. Wikipedia is required to represent fringe, abandoned, or minority views proportionally, not equivalently.

For this reason, the Hypotheses section should be revised, reduced, or partially removed, with obsolete theories explicitly marked as such. A concise summary of earlier theories can remain, but the section must be reweighted to reflect the fact that the Illyrian–Illyricum continuity model is the view most supported by modern interdisciplinary scholarship (linguistic, archaeological, and genetic).

This adjustment would bring the article in line with Wikipedia’s content policies and ensure that the page accurately reflects the current academic understanding of Albanian ethnogenesis. Geni93 (talk) 01:36, 27 November 2025 (UTC)
