"Sakka Joweda"
When and why was this track recorded? 81.153.151.27 (talk) 21:11, 7 December 2022 (UTC)
"the perfect musical antiheroes for the seventies"
The citation for this Rolling Stone quote leads to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction video, not the Aja review where this quote was originally from. 23.241.3.143 (talk) 06:24, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
- I think it should be sourced to this Michael Duffy article. But a subscription is required. Martinevans123 (talk) 08:38, 4 October 2024 (UTC)
Walter Becker listed as a current member
Why is he still listed as a current member even though he passed away nearly a decade ago? I understand that he and Donald Fagen were the only two consistent members of the group since its formation, and I respect the idea that Steely Dan is not the same band without him, however this is about the only band that follows this precendent. For example, Entwistle is not listed as a member of the Who, even though he was one of the driving forces behind the band for 40 years. I'm not necessarily advocating one way or the other, I just want to know why this article makes this choice when no others do. Skynnyrr (talk) 20:22, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
- I agree he is no longer a member. Have moved him down. Martinevans123 (talk) 20:25, 3 February 2025 (UTC)
Duo or band?
Yes, Becker and Fagen were the musical duo at the core of Steely Dan throughout most of its history. But when did they ever issue a record, or even play live, as just a duo? Furthermore, the band is still extant today. How can that be as "a duo", when Becker died in 2017? I think it's quite misleading to describe them as "a duo" in the first sentence. Martinevans123 (talk) 16:38, 8 May 2025 (UTC) p.s. Donald Fagen says: "... is an American singer-songwriter and musician who was the co-founder, lead singer, co-songwriter, and keyboardist of the rock band Steely Dan...
" (and Walter Becker similarly)
- Agree that band is proper, not duo. Jusdafax (talk) 17:09, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
- Band – although a primary source (official website), they describe themselves as a group. Becker and Fagen might be a duo, but Steely Dan is a band. And just like any long time act, the band has had multiple members. --☾Loriendrew☽ ☏(ring-ring) 23:37, 10 May 2025 (UTC)
- No objection to "group" also. The two terms are pretty much interchangeable across most popular music articles. Martinevans123 (talk) 08:24, 11 May 2025 (UTC)
- WHY DO YOU KEEP CHANGING IT BACK??? Nathanielpc (talk) 17:18, 16 May 2025 (UTC)
- Because it's wrong. Martinevans123 (talk) 17:21, 16 May 2025 (UTC)
- Why is it wrong? Two members = duo. Nathanielpc (talk) 18:46, 18 May 2025 (UTC)
- You think Steely Dan has had just two members across the past 54 years? There's an entire article on the membership at List of Steely Dan members. Martinevans123 (talk) 21:04, 18 May 2025 (UTC)

Band Origination
Descr Cdellert (talk) 07:25, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- Should this article include the story that Fagan and Becker were initially contacted by Denny Dias? Cdellert (talk) 07:36, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- See "The Denny Dias" May 5 2025 with Rick Beato in YouTube.

- Are you sure that's the video you meant? Martinevans123 (talk) 10:36, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- I get an error in Wikipedia when trying to include the URL that goes directly to that video.
- Cdellert (talk) 12:17, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- I added another text explaining that once you are in the main site for Rick Beato you need to search for "The Denny Dias Band" video. Cdellert (talk) 12:23, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- This one? It's 50 minutes long, so a timecode would be very useful, thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:33, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, that's the one. I'd like to know how you got that link to work.
- Excuse my “ignorance”, I’m new to Wikipedia “Talk”. I'm not sure what a timecode is exactly and what it should look like. Cdellert (talk) 12:40, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- I don't know why it worked for me and not you... I just pasted in the url as normal! There's a way to link to an exact time for any YouTube video. But you could just tell us the time when the relevant material is discussed? I see that Rick Beato has his own article. Many thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 12:43, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- I was trying to add the link in the iPhone app version of Wikipedia which may be why I was getting the error. I'm now trying to add the URL using Wikipedia in Safari Browser to see if I still get an error.
- ... I get this error now...
- "Your edit was not saved because it contains a new external link to a site registered on Wikipedia's blacklist or Wikimedia's global blacklist. Cdellert (talk) 13:19, 3 June 2025 (UTC)"
- How very odd, maybe you should ask at Wikipedia talk:Spam blacklist? In the meantime I'm sure others would be able to use the link I posted above. An approx time would still be useful. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 13:24, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- Try again with a different URL:

- Now back to my original comment that maybe the Wikipedia article should include Denny Dias as one of the original and founding members of Steely Dan. Cdellert (talk) 13:33, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- How about a time? Or do we all have to watch the full 50 minutes? Martinevans123 (talk) 13:43, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- Now back to my original comment that maybe the Wikipedia article should include Denny Dias as one of the original and founding members of Steely Dan. Cdellert (talk) 13:33, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- What wording would you suggest? Here's a secondary source. It seems the key name is Bruce Rothstein. Martinevans123 (talk) 16:46, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- I know it's "lazy" but I don't have any wording to suggest. I don't have much experience in building or editing content in Wikipedia. Perhaps a reference to the early influence Denny Dias had on the formation of the band with a reference to the YouTube article.Cdellert (talk) 17:06, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- Something like: "
The band was formed after Bruce Rothstein, the manager for the Long Island band which included guitarist Denny Dias and whose bass player had just left, posted a advertisement in The Village Voice seeking new bass and piano players. Fagen and Becker responded and at their first played for two or three hours without stopping. The band initially played only covers
"? I guess it would need to fit in just after the first mention of Dias in the "Formative and early years (1967–1972)" section. Martinevans123 (talk) 17:34, 3 June 2025 (UTC)- Sounds good. Looks like you a lot of experience with Wikipedia.
- Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. Cdellert (talk) 17:58, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
- You'll soon pick it up! Let's see if anyone else wants to comment/ adjust before it's added. I think that video as a really cool find. I had no idea. Thanks so much. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:02, 3 June 2025 (UTC)
